An Ode to Drew.
It only seems right that our first ode is dedicated to our magazine’s name-sake and all-round superwomen, Drew Barrymore. Drew is the reason this magazine exists, not just because of her name or the fact she completely encompasses the essence of this magazine as a young, creative girl, but because she is the reason behind our friendship.
One day at uni, I was reading Drew’s book, Wildflower, and Lou looked over and asked if she could borrow it when I was finished. Love for Drew was the first thing we had in common (Lou even gave me the book back, which made me know I could trust her.) Before long we realised our interest in inspiring girls didn’t just stop at Drew Barrymore. We had a mutual love for Zoe Foster-Blake, Lorelai Gilmore and Nigella Lawson, discovering that girls who are breaking the mold, girls who are creative, opinionated, inspiring, unapologetic and self-made are who we look up to. Without Drew Barrymore this creative duo would have never began and Drew Magazine would still be but an unrealised dream.
Our favourite anecdotes about Drew are ones that show her strength and determination. When Hollywood stopped offering female characters with grit and personality, Drew’s answer was to create them herself. This lead to the birth of Flower Film, Inc. which she co-founded with her best friend, Nancy Juvonen (another inspiring collaborative duo). Flower Films has given the world 50 First dates, Never been Kissed, He’s Just Not That Into You and the Charlie’s Angels franchise. Thank you, Flower Films. In 2013, she created her beauty line, Flower Cosmetics, pledging to create quality makeup that is free from animal testing and available for all skin tones, at an affordable cost.
I remember one lazy Saturday morning turning on the TV to an interview with Drew Barrymore. She spoke candidly about her troubled past and her career ebbs and flows, before being asked “What profession would you not like to do?” She responded, “Unemployed”. The idea that someone truly loved working was foreign to me up until that point. I thought work was what you did just to pay for the rest of your life. Her answer changed my whole world-view and set me on a path to find a job I was passionate about and a determination to surround myself with like-minded people. Lou is my like-minded person.
We not only love Drew for her acting ability or savvy business sense but because of her uninhibited, trendsetting, rebellious, free spirit. She wears her heart on her sleeve and isn’t afraid to show the good, the bad, and the ugly. She has not shied away from her short- comings. Life is not perfect, even for Drew Barrymore, but in the face of adversity she shows a unique resilience and a fire that is unmeasured.
In a world where everyone is striving for individuality, Drew is effortlessly original.
